The skills challenge only continues for so many companies. And while there is no single solution, part of the answer is certainly the work-based learning opportunities that often turn from short-term experiences into long-term employee matches.
Indiana INTERNnet (IIN) is the leader in creating such connections. Late last year, in fact, the high-tech, high-touch (when needed) program reached the milestone of 10,000 “documented” internship completions. A record 1,200-plus came in 2019 alone.
We say documented because the true number is likely quite a bit higher as post-internship follow-up pales in comparison to actual connections and experiences. There is no bulk event leading to the 10,000. In reality, it’s one internship taking place 10,000 times.
That’s 10,000 opportunities for students and others to learn about Indiana communities and careers. That’s 10,000 instances of enthusiastic talent being put in place to help solve workplace challenges. And we know many of those interns became full-time employees and contributors to Indiana’s business and economic success.
Mike Slocum, IIN executive director, shares that “many students searching for internships want to be entrepreneurs. They are looking to gain that real-world experience to supplement what they have already learned or seen at other internships or jobs. And those interns are ready to contribute to your organization today!”
If you are not using the IIN platform, you’re only handicapping yourself. Again, it’s not the sole answer. But it is a valuable resource to assist in the talent game. An online internship fair on January 30 would be an excellent place to start or expand current efforts.
Intern excellence is celebrated February 18 during the annual IMPACT Awards. Join in to hear firsthand about how interns are making a difference each and every day. Big news is coming later this year as IIN expands its offerings to provide even greater resources for employers, students/career changers and educators.
