Drug abuse is impacting individuals, families and communities in our state and across the nation. The economic effects – estimated at $1.5 billion per year – are also significant.
The Indiana Chamber and the Wellness Council of Indiana, at the request of Gov. Eric Holcomb and his Indiana Commission to Combat Drug Abuse, are partnering to assist employers and their workers through the Indiana Workforce Recovery initiative.
Specific components will be revealed as they are ready for implementation. The focus will be to educate and deliver guidance to employers in these areas:
- Offering health benefits that provide coverage for substance abuse disorders
- Expanding drug testing to include prescription drugs
- Providing effective employee assistance, wellness and work-life programs that include information and services related to substances abuse prevention, treatment and return to work issues
- Training managers to recognize and respond to substance abuse issues
Jennifer Pferrer, executive director of the Wellness Council, will oversee the combined effort. She emphasizes the focus on reducing the stigma of drug abuse and instead prioritize re-engagement in the workforce.
Stay tuned for much more on this important initiative.
