For many employees, maintaining connections during times of social distancing, and reconnecting socially and professionally with colleagues after reopening, may be incredibly difficult. Employees are grappling with mental and emotional health concerns as much, if not more, as they are with physical health. Here are six ways you can support your employees:

1. Add meditation to the benefit list. Some companies are using popular mediation apps, such as Calm or Headspace, to help employees manage and improve their mental health. Consider adding free access to these apps for your employees as part of the employee benefits package.

2. Offer Mental Health First Aid training. Employers can offer Mental Health First Aid training to employees. This training is now available virtually. Participants learn about the signs and symptoms of someone in distress so they can provide “first aid” to the individual.

3. Offer access to a dietician, nutritionist or cooking classes. Most people are eating at home quite a bit more than usual. Understanding how to purchase and prepare healthier foods from the grocery store can be a big perk for employees. Companies can help by offering access to a dietician, nutritionist or virtual cooking classes to their employees.

4. Teach employees how to be more resilient. Right now, building the skills to improve resilience is critically important. Consider training your front-line staff in resilience skills to help them more effectively manage challenges in both their personal and professional lives.

5. Social media as mental health support? Some companies have formed private social media groups for employees to connect with each other for after-hours support and entertainment. One organization’s group featured an employee musician, which provided the group with the opportunity to listen to some great music and the musician with additional exposure. Such groups could be a nice outlet for employees to connect in a more social setting during times of social distancing.

6. Animal pics to the rescue! What’s better for improving your mood or mindset than a picture of a puppy, kitten or even a baby otter? Consider encouraging your employees to share pictures and stories of their pets and/or favorite animals. This is a great way to enhance social connectedness between employees and provide a platform for respite from the heavy nature of the daily news cycle.
