Mission No. 1 in Indiana – or at least really close to the top of the list – is keeping talented people within the state. (Of equal importance might be attracting skilled individuals or entrepreneurs but that is another story.)

This is not the typical article you find in this space. But then Samantha “Sammy” Johnson-Helms is anything but typical. Witness the following:

  • A Hoosier through and through: Born in Fort Wayne, grew up in Columbus, earned bachelor’s degree in Indianapolis at Butler University, worked and pursued graduate degrees in Bloomington at Indiana University and is now the executive director of the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra (THSO)
  • Did we mention she plays the clarinet – it’s been her passion since seeing a talent show as a third-grade student. She was and remains the principal clarinetist with THSO and has performed with the Columbus Philharmonic and as part of an award-winning quartet
  • Business is at the center of her story. An internship at Cook Pharmica (now Catalent) led to a career in operational excellence, a Six Sigma Black Belt and skills that carry over every day into her musical career

Johnson-Helms, who is a doctoral candidate in clarinet performance with minors in music theory and arts administration, says she is excited to “work directly in a field that I went to school for.” A self-described “go-getter” who likes to learn on the job, she is destined for even greater accomplishments in the years to come.

The current episode of the IN Chamber podcast details Sammy’s story in her own words and music. While you can listen and enjoy, pay special attention to what she has to say about the art of listening – whether in the business office or on stage.
