Don’t worry. We’re talking state legislators – not poltergeists (a nod to a classic ’80s movie). But the scene at the Statehouse still could seem scary and surreal if you don’t stay informed.
There will be much to keep track of over the next several months and the Indiana Chamber is here to make sure you know what’s happening on issues most critical to your organization and employees.
Since 2019 is a budget session, setting the state’s financial plan for the next two years will command a lot of the attention. The Indiana Chamber will be strongly advocating for fiscal responsibility, including generating more funds (along with health care savings) through a $2 tax increase on a pack of cigarettes. The Chamber offers a preview of the other top issues in the latest BizVoice® magazine.
An integral piece of our ongoing public policy communications is the weekly Legislative Report, which highlights Statehouse activity through written and video accounts. These Friday afternoon emails will begin on January 11. A new facet this year will be additional shorter versions earlier in the week that let you know the latest actions and the Chamber’s quick take. If you are not currently getting Legislative Report, please email us to make that happen.
Social media also plays an important role. Our Twitter account – @indianachamber – will post excerpts from Chamber testimony on priority bills and other quotes about what’s happening in the Legislature.
The first monthly policy call of 2019 is on January 18 and will cover the opening weeks of the General Assembly. Additional calls will provide critical updates on legislation that could impact your business. Make sure to register for these members-only events. Chamber issue experts will lead the discussions and be available to answer your questions.
As the session unfolds, you will be asked to voice your position on bills thorough our grassroots program. It’s a quick and easy way to let legislators know a particular bill is important to you and your company – and one we know is very effective in garnering their attention. Our annual Legislative Directory booklet and app also contain important legislator contact information, committee assignments and more. The Legislative Directory will be available this month, with the app (available now) having real-time updates throughout the session.
In late January/early February, you can look for the first of two Legislative Agenda documents, which detail all bills that the Chamber will take a position on and the reason for the stance.
Until then, we encourage you to frequent our Policy Center that features various legislative resources, including the Legislative Business Issues, which sets the framework for the Legislative Agenda.
If you have any comments or questions about a particular policy, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Chamber’s government affairs team.
Here’s to a very successful 2019 legislative session!
