The Bill of Rights Institute (BRI) is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that works to advance civic education nationwide. Founded in 1999, BRI is a national leader in civics and history curricula, programs and professional development. We teach U.S. history and government, constitutional principles and the skills of citizenship.
BRI serves a network of more than 90,000 teachers, who reach approximately nine million students per year. All BRI curricula and programs are offered to teachers and students free of charge, thanks to our growing network of supporters, including individuals, foundations and businesses throughout the United States.
We believe civic education is vital to sustaining our communities, institutions and workforce. Civics provides the knowledge of America’s story and core principles as well as the skills and habits needed to be responsible and productive citizens.
Among these are the durable skills that businesses and employers value — like effective communication, critical thinking, collaborating in groups, ethical judgement and reasoning, and managing disagreement.
BRI believes civics must be prioritized in schools, and teachers must be equipped to help young people learn these lifelong skills, so they are prepared to engage in the democratic process, improve their communities and succeed in their careers.
