Joe McGuinness is stepping down from his role as the commissioner of the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) after five years. Governor Holcomb named Mike Smith, an INDOT deputy commissioner and its chief financial officer, as the new commissioner, effective Monday.

“From day one, Commissioner McGuinness harnessed his local government experience and the many resources at INDOT to find innovative ways to expedite construction projects and create safer work zones all while finishing projects on budget and ahead of schedule whenever possible,” Gov. Holcomb says. “Under his leadership, Indiana continues to offer a world-class infrastructure system, which remains a key engine to our economic growth and safety. Joe’s legacy is one Hoosiers can be proud of and will have long lasting positive impacts right here at the crossroads of America.”

On a personal note, as an Evansville native – and one who travels home regularly to visit friends and family – I cannot thank Commissioner McGuinness enough for his leadership and oversight of the expedited (near) completion of I-69’s southwest corridor. The fact that CNBC gave Indiana’s infrastructure a No. 3 ranking in last year’s “Top States for Business” says a lot about our state’s ability to remain the “Crossroads of America.” He thoughtfully and professionally navigated the many competing interests for infrastructure investment and was absolutely the right guy at the right time for INDOT and Indiana. The Indiana Chamber wishes Joe nothing but the best in his future endeavors.
