Mayor Joe Hogsett joins ribbon-cutting and major presentation to Gleaners Food Bank
INDIANAPOLIS – Kroger made a six-figure donation today to Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana. The grocer made the presentation during the celebration of its latest investment in Indianapolis. A ribbon-cutting marked the end of a $2 million dollar project to provide enhancements inside the Kroger at 227 W. Michigan in downtown Indianapolis.
Customers will first appreciate the bright and colorful new décor, new displays and the expanded selection of products made possible by these upgrades. The changes embody Kroger’s commitment to offering fresh, affordable food in inviting and convenient surroundings.
“These are exciting times for us as we continue to invest in our stores,” said division vice president Michelle Phanthavongsa. “Today’s celebration is part of a year-long plan to present stores where Hoosiers love to shop and associates love to work. We will have more of these events in the weeks ahead as we strive for even more stores that are always Full, Fresh and Friendly.”
Mayor Joe Hogsett participated in the ribbon-cutting and said, “I’m proud to help celebrate the new investments to Kroger’s Downtown location and their generous donation to Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana — showing how much Kroger truly cares about Indianapolis and everyone who calls this place home. On behalf of the City, I extend my thanks to Kroger and all the team members who work to serve our residents every day.”
The celebration served as the setting for Kroger’s latest hunger relief donation. The grocer presented a check for $130,000 to Gleaners Food Bank. “Gleaners and Kroger have been partners since our founding in 1980,” said Gail Lowry, Chief Philanthropy Office at Gleaners, “and we are so grateful for today’s donation. It is just the latest example of the year-round support we receive from Kroger. We work together on food drives, food rescue, and the operation of 63 school-based pantries. Today’s gift from Kroger will help us provide 1,040,000 meals to Hoosiers in need.”
Today’s donation is an element of the Zero Hunger | Zero Waste plan, Kroger’s commitment to eliminate hunger in the communities it serves. Since the plan’s inception in 2017, Kroger has given more than $1 billion to hunger relief services across the country, which includes 582 million pounds of surplus fresh food rescued and donated to feed Americans in need. Through Kroger’s partnerships, the Zero Hunger | Zero Waste plan has had a role in the delivery of more than 3 billion meals to serve struggling families throughout the year.
