According to a recent report from the United States Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, the lowest number of Hoosiers in recent history were injured or sick at work last year.

Indiana had a rate of 2.9 workplace injuries and illnesses per 100 full-time workers in 2022, experiencing a decrease from 3.2 in 2021. This represents a 74.3% decrease from the high of 11.3 per 100 full-time workers in 1994. Furthermore, 2022 marked the eighth consecutive year under four injuries per 100 full-time workers.

Indiana employers and employees are to be commended for this improvement in workplace safety. The Indiana Chamber continues to be a statewide leader in training workplace safety training hosting educational opportunities throughout the year. This includes the Indiana Safety and Health Conference (to be held February 26-28, 2024), the state’s largest event addressing workplace safety and health.

Ashton Eller is the Indiana Chamber’s vice president of health care and employment law. For the prior 14 years, Eller worked at the organization in other roles – the last five as manager of political affairs. Previously, he spent two years at the Indiana Department of Labor. Eller also is a former president and member of the Indiana State Fair Board of Directors, elected from District 7.
