The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is proposing amendments and an expansion of the information collected and sectors covered under the Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program (GHGRP). This is an effort to improve the quality of the data collected under the program by addressing changes in industry practices, adopting improved calculation and monitoring methods and collecting new data to understand new source categories or new emissions sources for specific sectors.

The GHGRP currently collects information from 41 source categories and over 8,000 GHG emissions sources. This proposal would revise the reporting requirements for a host of industry sectors such as stationary fuel combustion, cement/ammonia/glass/iron and steel/lime production, petroleum and natural gas systems and others. For petroleum and natural gas systems, the EPA plans to align the reporting requirements with those from the oil and gas methane rule.

EPA will open a 60-day comment period after the proposal is published in the Federal Register and plans to impose the new reporting requirements starting on January 1, 2023, with 2023 reporting year information to be submitted by April 1, 2024.
