Kokomo has been in love with vehicles since the birth of the auto industry. It’s as if it’s in the DNA of the community. Fiat Chrysler Automotive (FCA) is trying to keep it that way by becoming more involved with local schools and expanding operations.

In the current issue of BizVoice magazine, FCA shared how it is investing in the next generation of workers as it creates a pipeline of potential talent to fill good, high-paying jobs.

The workforce development program is part of the World Class Manufacturing Academy (WCMA Indiana) in Tipton. Since its inception in 2017, the program has engaged with more than 5,000 students from local communities.

Students learn about the company’s methodology in World Class Manufacturing, while meeting current employees and participating in hands-on activities. Read the story here.

A month ago, FCA announced it will invest $400 million to repurpose an idled transmission plant in Kokomo to build the GMET4 engine.

The new project will retain 1,000 Indiana jobs and create nearly 200 new positions to support production. The Kokomo Engine Plant is slated to start operation in the second quarter of 2021 (as of the time of the announcement).

Side note: Hoosier Elwood Haynes invented the first gasoline-powered automobile in 1894, as we featured in the January-February 2020 issue of BizVoice magazine. He worked with Elmer and Edgar Apperson in Kokomo to bring his vision to life. Read that story here.
