Dunebrook’s Dragon Boat Family Festival: Where Community Spirit Powers Prevention
Each fall, the shores of Stone Lake in La Porte erupt with energy as paddles slice through the water, drums echo across the waves, and families cheer from the sidelines. It’s all part of Dunebrook’s Dragon Boat Family Festival, which is a one-of-a-kind event that combines adrenaline-pumping racing with a powerful purpose: preventing child abuse and strengthening families.
Now entering its 9th year, the festival draws community teams from across Northwest Indiana including businesses, schools, nonprofits, civic groups, and families who are all eager to row in unison for a cause that unites us all. Dragon boat racing doesn’t require elite athleticism: success depends on teamwork, timing, and trust. These are the same values that guide Dunebrook’s mission every day.
Beyond the water, the festival offers something for everyone. Guests can enjoy live music, delicious food trucks, a vibrant kids’ zone, face painting, games, and more – all set against the backdrop of scenic Stone Lake. It’s a full day of family-friendly fun with a deeper impact.
Proceeds support Dunebrook’s comprehensive programs, which served over 46,000 individuals in 2024 across eight Indiana counties. These include home visitation for new parents, child advocacy, prevention education, and support services that build stronger families and safer communities.
Whether you’re racing toward victory or soaking in the celebration on shore, the Dragon Boat Family Festival is a joyful reminder of what’s possible when a community comes together with a shared commitment to protecting children and empowering families.
