The following is a guest post from our partners at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce:

Natural gas bolsters U.S. energy security by reducing our reliance on foreign energy. Today, rather than being relying on imports from unstable parts of the world, we use homegrown energy to meet our domestic needs. Natural gas also provides our allies with critically needed energy supplies, through gas exports that help reduce dependence on hostile and unstable regimes around the world.

  • U.S. companies provided 50% of Europe’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies in 2022 while Russian gas shipments to the continent dropped by half in the same year.
  • Europe remains the main destination for U.S. LNG exports, accounting for 61% of exports in December 2023.
  • Between 2005- 1 2020 Indiana greenhouse gas emissions declined 32% as natural gas consumption increased by 56%.
  • Residential natural gas prices are ~29% lower than the U.S. average.
  • Three in five Indiana househoulds use natural gas as a primary home heating source.
  • The share of electricity generation from natural gas increased from 5% in 2010 to 33% in 2022.
  • 37,340 jobs in Indiana were directly supported by the natural gas and oil industry in 2021.
  • Consumption by sector: Residential (17%); commercial (12%); industrial (44%); and electric power (27%).
  • Historically a coal-driven state, Indiana has invested in bringing renewables forward and anticipates 9,000 megawatts from wind, solar and storage to come online by 2028. Natural gas is a key tool to support these renewable sources, while helping ensure a consistent and reliable grid for Indiana consumers, business and industry.
