Legendary football coach Paul “Bear” Bryant is attributed the phrase, “Defense wins championships.”
We can relate as many times the Indiana Chamber needs to engage on bills to stop them from becoming law. This session, there are numerous bills that could have an adverse effect on employers in Indiana.
In the employment law area, it’s abundantly clear the Chamber is going to be playing defense on several bills that would hurt Hoosier businesses’ bottom line. Some deal with increasing the minimum wage; those include House Bills 1192 and 1394, and Senate Bill 366. An increase in the minimum wage in today’s labor market is the last thing the Legislature needs to be considering.
House Bill 1253 also goes above and beyond the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, mandating employers pay overtime in unnecessary situations. This legislation makes it mandatory for an employer to not just pay overtime at 1.5 times the employees’ hourly rate, but two times in some situations.
The Chamber will engage regularly at the Statehouse to protect your business from unnecessary legislation. Running a business is already difficult enough. You don’t need additional regulations from the state government tightening your budgets.
Defense might not get the biggest headlines, but many times it is half the game.
