The Biden Administration has announced funding for 90 projects across the state totaling $3.3 billion tied to the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). The greatest percentage of these investments — $2.7 billion or 82% — are targeted towards road and bridge improvements. Additionally, funding and other support has been announced to boost internet connectivity, improve water infrastructure, build public transportation capacity and invest in the clean energy transition.
To date, more than 277,000 Hoosier households have enrolled in the Affordable Connectivity Program, which seeks to reduce the cost of internet connectivity. It has been estimated that as many as one million households may be eligible to enroll in the program. The IIJA prioritized funding to improve water infrastructure and access to clean and safe water. Indiana is on track to receive in excess of $127 million with a large portion of these funds dedicated to removing lead service connections from water distribution systems.
The state is estimated to be awarded $670 million over five years to expand public transportation options. Nearly 20% of this funding ($129 million) has already been allocated for fiscal year 2022. Further, tens of millions of dollars have been invested in low- and no-emission school and transit buses in communities across the state. Roughly one-third of an estimated $99 million has been dedicated to expanding electric vehicle charging infrastructure in 2022 and 2023.
More than $100 million has been allocated to the state for energy efficiency and clean energy projects. The largest share of these funds is dedicated to assisting Hoosiers with home weatherization to improve efficiency and lower energy costs.
The Government Services Administration has developed a map that displays which projects in the state have received funding.
