Indiana Commissioner for Higher Education Teresa Lubbers announced Tuesday she plans to leave her current role after the 2022 legislative session following more than a decade of service in the position and a career filled with impressive achievements.

She will also be stepping down as chair of the Governor’s Workforce Cabinet, to which she was appointed by Gov. Eric Holcomb in 2019. Currently the nation’s longest serving state higher education executive officer, Lubbers has served nearly three decades in various capacities in supporting and working on behalf of Indiana’s students, schools and economic and workforce needs.

“There has been no one, in all my years of working in and around state government and education policy, who has been more passionate about and committed to providing educational opportunities and maximizing each student’s personal potential than Teresa Lubbers,” praises Indiana Chamber President and CEO Kevin Brinegar. “Teresa has been at the forefront of every effort to move Indiana education forward. She is widely respected for her knowledge, thoughtful approach and passion.”

Lubbers is the past chair for the Higher Learning Advocates Board of Directors, a commissioner for the Education Commission of the States and a member of the Advisory Council for the Institute for Workforce Excellence (a subsidiary of the Indiana Chamber) and the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning.

On a personal note, I served on Lubbers’ leadership team at the Commission for Higher Education for nine years.

From authoring Indiana’s charter school law to her relentless efforts to raise the skill level of all Hoosiers, few public servants have done more to advance education and economic opportunity in our state than Teresa Lubbers. She has been a long-time ally of the Indiana Chamber on a wide range of critical policy issues, and I’ve benefited – both personally and professionally – from her wise counsel, good humor and friendship.

Brinegar concludes: “We at the Indiana Chamber thank her for her service to our state and congratulate her on her retirement from the Commission.”
