Err on the “safe” side.

Better to be “safe” than sorry.

Play it “safe.”

Familiar expressions. So familiar, in fact, that the message itself – “Be safe” – is often lost or overlooked.

No matter who – or where – you are safety dangers exist. The Indiana Safety and Health Conference on March 1-3 emphasized the importance of safety in the workplace.

Presented by the ASSP Central Indiana Chapter and the Indiana Chamber of Commerce in partnership with INSafe and the Coalition for Construction Safety, it featured more than 60 educational sessions, opportunities to interact with presenters, an expo and more. For the first time, it took place virtually in light of COVID-19.

ASSP Central Indiana Chapter President Jeff Fox kicked off the opening general session: “This year’s theme, Everybody Wins with Safety, reminds us of the importance of safety compliance. While it’s impossible to guarantee the safety of all workers, the odds of an accident happening are significantly lower when safety regulations are complied with. When we gamble with safety, the currency we are using are our employees’ lives.”

As always, the event highlighted company and individual safety successes. The Governor’s Workplace Safety Awards honored multiple winners in three categories – education and outreach, partnerships and rising star – while Everyday Safety Heroes spotlighted people who champion occupational safety and health excellence in their workplaces. “Safety is more important than ever,” remarks Kerri Begley, Chamber vice president of business education and events. “Educating employers about enhancing safety is vital, as well as recognizing the businesses and people who embody safety ‘heroes.’

“We’re thrilled with the success of this virtual conference and look forward to bringing people together in person next year.”
