In response to increased gun violence and threats of intentional mass casualty events in the country, the White House and the Department of Homeland Security have been working to promote education of individuals and organizations on what to do in these situations. To support this effort, SMRT Indiana has made this specialty training standard in its On-Site “CPR & First Aid Training” which also includes American Heart Association CPR/AED & First Aid Certification.

“Just as important as learning CPR, individuals should also learn how to treat life-threatening bleeding.” said Josh Halstead, Director of Business Development at SMRT Indiana. ” A person can bleed to death in less than five minutes, way before professional emergency services arrive. Bystanders will always be first on the scene and with a little bit of training can save lives.”

The training covers how to react in the event of an active shooter with key strategies such as “RUN, HIDE, FIGHT”. Additionally, participants will have hands-on training on how to perform life-saving bleeding control techniques including the use of tourniquets and hemostatic bandages. Each participant will also receive a SWAT-T™ Tourniquet after completion of the course. Halstead points out that “just as important as knowing what to do, is having the tools to do it.”

The “Stop the Bleed” training is also offered as a standalone class or as an add-on to other training. For those interested in learning more, visit www.smrtindiana.com/stop-the-bleed.
