Allegion Chairman, President and CEO Dave Petratis has been named a “CEO Who Gets It” by the National Safety Council, an honor presented annually to company leaders who go above and beyond to protect employees both on and off the job.
Petratis is among an elite list of eight 2018 recipients. The National Safety Council said each 2018 honoree has built his or her organization’s safety strategy using four key components: leadership and employee engagement, safety management solutions, risk reduction and performance measurement.
“These leaders understand that nothing drives business like safety,” said Deborah A.P. Hersman, president and CEO of the National Safety Council. “They have set a high bar for both their peers and employees, and we are proud to recognize their efforts.”
Petratis was chosen for the honor because of his genuine “safety first” mindset – which is made evident by Allegion’s “Be safe, be healthy” culture, as well as low incident rates at the company’s global facilities where it manufacturers innovative safety and security products. When compared to recent Bureau of Labor Statistics data, Allegion’s incident rates were 85 percent lower than the industry average.
Senior Vice President of Global Operations and Integrated Supply Chain Chris Muhlenkamp said Allegion’s industry-leading safety results are positively impacted by Petratis’ active involvement in safety initiatives throughout the global organization.
“Dave takes part in incident reviews and environmental, health and safety program reviews, in addition to having regular conversations with employees about the importance of health and safety,” Muhlenkamp said. “Under Dave’s leadership, Allegion has truly recognized the importance of health and safety – and now we’re working to build a culture that isn’t confined to our manufacturing facilities and offices. I’m very proud to be able to work alongside a leader who actively encourages the wellbeing of others.”
Since becoming CEO when Allegion spun-off from Ingersoll Rand in 2013, Petratis has helped drive “The Allegion Safety Initiative,” a peer-to-peer safety program that teaches employees to incorporate safety into their everyday activities. He’s also a key supporter of “Trailblazer,” an internal competition in which Allegion employees develop and pitch their innovative business ideas. This has led to process improvements for Allegion, as well as award-winning products that help increase safety for Allegion customers.
“Allegion’s goal – and my personal desire – is to have safety be an unconscious act in which training, principles and practices are taken off the job,” Petratis said. “We know Allegion has the opportunity to keep people safe for one-third of the day. However, the true majority of the day, people are exposed to everything in the world, which likely creates many more safety concerns than those that may be faced on the job.
