101st annual juried exhibition will feature works by 129 Hoosier artists

INDIANAPOLIS – Showcasing the talents of artists from Indiana and beyond, the Hoosier Art Salon exhibition will return to the Indiana State Museum from Aug. 23 through Oct. 26.

Now in its 101st year, including 30 years at the state museum, the annual Hoosier Art Salon exhibition has become known as the state’s preeminent juried art exhibition of works by Indiana artists.

“This annual exhibition provides a great opportunity for our visitors to experience a mix of different artistic styles and subject matter all in one place,” said Paula Katz, senior curator of art for the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites. “It also introduces these artists from across our state to new audiences who can connect with and appreciate their works.”

The artworks on display will feature 145 paintings, drawings, sculptures, glass creations and more. All works in the exhibition are available for sale, offering art enthusiasts the opportunity to acquire a unique piece from a talented local creator.

More than 250 artists applied for the 2025 juried art exhibition, entering a total of 665 original works. Of those, Hoosier Art Salon selected 129 artists for the exhibition, representing 33 Indiana counties and six other states. Among the artists featured this year are nine former best-of-show winners, including the 2024 best-of-show winner Diane Ubelhor-Wunderlich with her new painting “Roadside Symphony,” along with 26 artists whose works will be appearing in the exhibition for the first time.

“On behalf of the Hoosier Art Salon board of directors, we thank the Indiana State Museum for their support of the Hoosier Art Salon annual exhibition,” said Rebecca Kubacki, president of Hoosier Art Salon’s board of directors. “As we celebrate our 101st year, we look forward to our continued partnership and commitment to showcase Hoosier established and emerging artists.”

The Hoosier Art Salon legacy began in 1925 when the Daughters of Indiana opened the doors to the first exhibition at Marshall Field & Company department store in Chicago featuring 253 works by contemporary Indiana artists. In 1942, the annual exhibition moved to downtown Indianapolis, and in 1990 it had its first opening at the Indiana State Museum where it has been ever since except for a stint at the Indiana Historical Society from 2011-16.

This year, Hoosier Art Salon will award more than $55,000 in monetary prizes to top artists, including a $5,000 award for the best-of-show winner. In addition, last year’s event generated more than $84,000 in sales for participating artists. To qualify for entry, artists must either be a current Indiana resident or have previously lived in the state for at least one year.

The Hoosier Art Salon exhibition is free for members and included with museum admission, which is $23 for adults, $17 for youth (ages 3-17) and $21 for seniors. Visitors can go to IndianaMuseum.org to learn more and save by purchasing admission in advance.
