May is Mental Health Awareness Month and employers across Indiana are struggling to provide support for employees as mental health concerns continue to rise after the COVID-19 Pandemic. From March 2021 to March 2022, Indiana’s Be Well Crisis Helpline has seen an increase of 86.9% in mental health crisis calls, with over 35,000 calls in the last two years.

This May, Mental Health America of Indiana, the Indiana Council of Community Mental Health Centers, and the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Indiana are teaming up to turn Indiana green for Mental Health Awareness Month. You may already know that Mental Health Awareness Month (also referred to as “Mental Health Month”) has been observed during May in the U.S. since 1949.

This year, the Monument Circle Indianapolis will be lit green on May 1st and the days of Mental Health Awareness Week (May 9th – 15th)) to signify the lives lost by suicide, overdose, and mental illness. Organizations who will participate in sponsoring the lighting are Centerstone, Belden, Humana and IU Health.  In addition to Monument Circle, mental health advocacy networks asking all local businesses and offices to join them in raising awareness for Mental Health Month by lighting up green (the color for mental health awareness) during the month of May.
