Celebrating Andy Warhol’s birthday (August 6, 1928) and their 15th anniversary, Long-Sharp Gallery Indianapolis opens the exhibit Andy Warhol: A Survey of Portrait and Figurative Drawings from the Mid-1950s on August 6, 2021. The exhibit consists of nearly two dozen drawings, many of which make their public debut at this exhibit.

Each drawing was in the artist’s estate and, by virtue of his will, passed onto the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts upon his death. The gallery acquired each from the Foundation. Most were framed for the first time for this exhibition. With the approval of the Andy Warhol Foundation and the Artists Rights Society, the gallery will publish a seventy-page catalog commemorating the exhibition. Works are available for acquisition and priced between $14,000 and $125,000; the exhibition will last through September 2021.

The timing of the exhibit was “purposeful” says Gallery Director Nicole M.L. Sharp. “It was the perfect exhibit to celebrate both Warhol’s birthday and the gallery’s 15th year in business,” she said.

The drawings exhibit will be paired with another Warhol exhibition, one of Warhol’s photography. Both polaroids and gelatin silver photographs will be exhibited. According to Director of Operations Rachel Coy, “each photograph was framed to the exact specifications of the Warhol Foundation, right down to the type of mat and hinge used. We wanted this exhibit to be done perfectly and the artwork to be presented perfectly.” Several dozen photos from the 1970s and 1980s will be on exhibit priced between $12,000 and $35,000.

The August 6, 2021 opening is sponsored by Conrad Indianapolis; it will feature Warhol-inspired hors d’oeuvres and opens to the public from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm.
