What property taxes are used for

Nearly all – 99% – of the property tax monies collected are for local government purposes (less than 1% goes to the state). Chart 1 illustrates the percentage of tax levy for each local government sector. Schools account for over half of the overall total and 35% more than the second highest-spending unit.
