GroundProbe: Industry-Changing Safety Tool Released (Fishers)

(FISHERS) -- WAM is ready for North American market: The WAM provides mine and civil works crews with a tool that can be deployed in minutes and let them know if the slope they are working under has moved.

  • The WAM incorporates an integrated computer that will show a photo of the work area on a touch screen.
  • The work crew operating the system simply need to draw a shape around the area they wish to monitor on the touch screen and the WAM will start looking for any movement. So long as the green lights are flashing, work crews have peace of mind that the WAM has not detected rock movement.
  • The WAM provides confidence, helps eliminate uncertainty, and is a major step forward in protecting mine crews from rock falls.
  • Along with every WAM deployment all work-team members are given a Personal Alert Device (PAL). If an alert is given based on rock movement, the device will vibrate, beep, flash and display an SMS text message giving work crews the information they need.
  • The PAL can be mounted on a windscreen, or worn on a hardhat, a belt or a sleeve. The PAL system gives instant, wireless messages to all crew members up to one 1.6 miles from the WAM.

Rock faces do not fail spontaneously. Years of research and data collection has determined that slope and wall failures begin with micro movements over a period of days before collapsing. The WAM measures these minute movements from hundreds of feet away. Onboard software analyses acceleration patterns in detected movements and alerts when critical levels are detected, showing what moved, where, when and by how much.

The renowned Australian Geotechnical Engineer, John Simmons, recently commented:-
"Every mine in the world should think really seriously about having one of these."
